The fourth industrial revolution, known as Industry 4.0, has opened the doors to sustainable energy by
modernizing traditional network structure with information and communication technologies and
integrating renewable energy sources. In the context of Industry 4.0, modern network structures using
advanced Information and Communication Technologies enable us to use energy production,
transmission, distribution and consumption processes more efficiently and reliably. The future power
grid, which is called “Smart Grid”, provides bidirectional data communication by using information
and communication technologies from electricity generation to energy consumption. The Smart Grid
include infrastructure that will increase the effective use of available energy with dynamic pricing,
control, and protection. The use of wired and wireless communication technologies in Smart Grids
causes to physical and cyber security risks. The physical and cyber-attacks that take place in Smart
Grids can cause enormous damage. In this study, we have investigated the possible physical and cyber
risks that may take place in future power grid. In addition, the features of different wired and wireless
communication technologies used in the smart grid are presented in this study.
